The Golf Store You Can Trust

The driver is the longest club in your golf bag and has the largest club head. As the name implies, these clubs “drive” the ball down the fairway off of the tee shot and get it as close to the green as possible. It is generally used for par-4 or par-5 holes that require multiple shots. Many golfers focus intently on the distance they hit the driver, as longer drives lead to shorter approach shots. While a small percentage of amateurs drive the ball more than 250 yards, professionals routinely hit drives in excess of 300 yards.

GOLF DRIVER BUYING GUIDE

Purchasing a new golf club, regardless of the type, is a challenging decision. There is a lot of variety between brands and the attributes of any given club. So, there must be careful consideration to ensure the driver matches your play style and desired attributes. Here is some information to keep in mind when buying a new golf driver:

  • Loft: Loft is the amount of the face of the club that slopes back. Driver loft typically ranges from 8.5 to 15 degrees. The loft that is best for you will depend on your swing speed. The slower your swing, the more loft you will want. For the average male golfer, swing speed is between 80mph and 90mph. This equates to an ideal loft between 10.5 to 12 degrees.

  • Length: There is no standard length for drivers. Each manufacturer offers different models and different sizes. The maximum allowable reach of a golf driver is 48".  In general, the longer the shaft, the faster the ball will travel. If the ball is hit off-center, the distance the ball travels may actually decrease. The longer the shaft, the more difficult it is to control and hit the ball squarely. Your optimal choice will be the longest shaft you can control while still maintaining accuracy consistently.

  • Materials: The material your golf club should be made from depends on the frequency at which you play. Drivers are typically made from an alloy, stainless steel, and forged titanium. If you only play occasionally, use a high-quality alloy club that is affordable. A more consistent player will need a more durable driver such as titanium.
